STANTON STUDENTS PASS CERTIFICATIONS . . .

Nineteen students – so far – at Stanton Academy have passed Microsoft certifications this year, which is a record.  One student in particular, Juan M. DAVIS STUDENTS TAKE OVER SAFEWAY . . .

Several Davis High School Marketing students are going to "take over" the 24th & Nob Hill Safeway on Tuesday, April 30. Students will job shadow in three different job positions during the day. This excellent experience allows them to develop leadership skills, explore a job career and possibly get hired for jobs. Please stop by and support a great group of students! DISCOVERY LAB HOLDS SCIENCE FAIR . . .

The annual Discovery Lab School Science and Engineering Fair will take place on Thursday, February 7.  Students from all grades were encouraged to submit projects, which will be on display and judged during the day.  At 6 p.m. that evening, there will be an awards ceremony in the school's gymnasium/cafeteria.  Come and take a look at the great projects these students are created!  (Contact:  Discovery Lab, 573-5400)

Area CTE (Career and Technical Education) students are showcasing STEM and STEAM programs at the Central Washington State Fair this week. 

(STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; STEAM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.) 

Build your own robot or take a simulated flight in a helicopter!  Demonstrations will include Vex robotics, Lego Mindstorm, underwater robots and bobots, hi-tech welding, technology education, Microsoft Academy, engineering design, visual arts, biomedical science, and much more. 

High school and middle school students participating are from Yakima, YV Tech, Toppenish, and Zillah.


STEM COMMUNITY FORUMS SET ...

Several sessions are being held across the valley in the next month to gain input from area educators, parents, and business folks on ideas to improve offerings in our local schools in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Two of these sessions will be held in Yakima:

Attendees will have the opportunity to share what types of STEM-related educational offerings they feel our local students will need to have when they enter our community's workforce in the years ahead. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS EARNING TECH PREP CREDITS . . .

In 2011, Yakima high school students earned over 3500 Tech Prep credits through Yakima Valley Community College, valued at nearly $350,000 in tuition savings, books and fees. Here are the stats for our local students:

Davis 86 students earned 412 credits
Ike 85 students earned 435 credits
Stanton Academy 14 students earned 48 credits

As college costs continue to increase, this is a great way for our students to get a head start on their career pathway.

DAVIS ART STUDENTS RECEIVE REGIONAL RECOGNITION . . .

Congratulations to Alex Braman and Ciomara Juarez of Davis High School for their recognition at the ESD 105 Regional High School Art Show. Alex was named one of two "Board Choice" award winners for his entry, "City Yabanjim, Misplaced," which will be purchased by the ESD and become part of the permanent collection in the ESD's gallery. Ciomara was named one of the seven regional winners with her entry, "New Beginnings." Her piece will be sent on to OSPI to compete with other Washington high school students' work at the 39th Annual High School Student Art Show. The OSPI show will run from May 18 through 31. Currently, both students' works are on display at the Allied Arts through March 11.

Congratulations to Jose Tejeda of Stanton Academy who took 4th Place in Client Services at the Future Business Leaders of America regional competition held February 13 in Richland.  Way to go Jose!
