YAMA SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE . . . Remember the great Yakima Music en Acción (YAMA) program at Garfield Elementary School? This summer some of the students will be participating in the YAMA Summer Leadership Institute at Garfield. The goal of the institute is to further the returning students’ musical abilities while simultaneously training them to do more peer coaching of new students. Dates of the two-week institute are July 22 through 26 and July 29 through August 2, two hours per day. The group will be joined by special guest artist, Avi Mehta from Boston, for the first half of the summer institute. Mehta was trained in the Sistema Fellows Program at New England Conservatory of Music and directs several children’s and youth orchestras in the Boston metro area, including the New England Conservatory of Music and Longy School of Music, many of which have been modeled after El Sistema. His mission as a conductor is to connect children and programs across the Boston Metro area to provide richer musical and educational opportunities for all. He is currently embarking on a national El Sistema tour to visit and conduct children’s orchestras at El Sistema-inspired programs in Chicago, Cincinnati, Los Angles and YAKIMA!
